Captain Cook Cruises has launched AHOY, Australia’s first ‘ferry hailing’ app. The first on-demand route started yesterday and covers Elizabeth Bay to Garden Island and Circular Quay in Sydney for a cost of $7.50, much cheaper than a cab, Uber or water taxi.
“Like popular ride sharing services, AHOY allows customers to locate their ferry, hail a ride and then track the ferries journey and time until it arrives, all on a mobile device,” the company said in a media release.
Captain Cook Cruises, General Manager, Anthony Haworth, said: “With Uber proving so popular we thought why not translate this success to the water and start an on-demand ferry service.
“After meeting with Elizabeth Bay residents and receiving their positive feedback and support, we are confident it will be a success.
“We hope Elizabeth Bay is the first of many on-demand ferry services in the future.”
The service uses new “tubby class” ferries , which are designed to operate a high frequency, low cost service and can carry up to 60 passengers.
It targets city commuters and operates Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 9.15am and 4.15pm to 7.30pm.
