It’s terminal: TigerAir Australia shut down for good by Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia (VAH) has finally killed off its low-cost carrier Tigerair Australia, according to multiple media reports.

The carrier, which has been grounded since late April, was originally going to be mothballed by VAH and resurrected when travel recovered post-COVID.

But in a customer email obtained by Yahoo Finance, Tigerair Australia yesterday confirmed it will no longer exist in any form.

“Sadly, after nearly 13 years of operation we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the Tigerair Australia brand,” the email read.

“Since our very first flight on 23 November 2007 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, we’ve provided affordable air travel to more than 30 million customers across Australia, and through the commitment of our people, past and present, created a family of 1.2 million along the way.

“Thank you and farewell from Tigerair Australia.”
